The Carl Heavy Duty Cutters are great, but the magnetic alignment bar moves
when you cut stacks of paper. What were they thinking?
After Robin Clark mentioned using a carpenter's triangle to set the bar, we
realized that we should be using the lonely quilting rulers which have inhabited
the nest for years!

| Step 1
Open the paper clamp and put your ruler underneath.
Measure the size of the cut by aligning the ruler marking to the size you
want.
Put the magnetic guide against the ruler. BE SURE that you
also push the top of the guide so that it rests on the top of the bottom
rail. Most movement of the magnetic guide comes from the guide moving
within the groove that slides on the bottom rail. Rather than letting it
float around the bottom rail, move it so that the top of the groove touches the
bottom rail.

| Step 2:
Put the ruler on the left side of the magnetic bar. Make
sure the bar is still square. Then set your clamp next to the
ruler.
We use a clamp with a rubber grip on the bottom rail to hold the
ruler next to the bar. Note that it's still possible for the bar to
shift. However, if a shift occurs, the ruler will no longer be touching
the bottom rail so you should notice the movement in time to reset the
guide. Also, since your clamp marks the position, you shouldn't need to
re-measure, just put the ruler back and align the guide to the vertical edge of
the ruler. |

|
| Step 3:
Load your paper and cut. |
|
| Note:
If your magnet looks like this one, you'll want to clean it so
that it has a better shot at sticking to the metal base of the
cutter! |
