Bad Dollar Store Buys

These items are usually BAD buys.  Evaluate for yourself, as always, but in evaluating MULTIPLE Dollar Stores, The Goose has never found a bargain in these items:

  • Pencils - plain yellow pencils are almost always cheaper at Walmart, Office Depot or other stores.  You MIGHT find decorated pencils at a good price.

  • Medicine - GROSS!  You don't know how old these things are, some have been imported from Mexico or the Orient and you don't know the quality.  Unless you're on welfare and are desperate, it's not worth potential further illness from taking this stuff!  If you're selling headache kits, remember that some recipients will really take the aspirin.  There are liability issues here...don't take a risk!

  • Food/Candy - again - GROSS!  The Goose does think it's ok to use the tea and coffee for tea dyeing fabric or paper.  It's probably ok to use the sugar for sugar scrubs (non-edible).  Again, if you're thinking you'll use the cocoa for Snowman Soup or the sugar packets to tell someone how "sweet" they are, remember that some recipients will eat this stuff and you could end up with liability issues.  Again...IT'S NOT WORTH IT!

  • Cosmetics - BE CAREFUL!  The Goose does buy petroleum jelly as a mold release.  New, unopened, clean lotions and shampoos are probably ok too (examine the store - if the merchandise is leaking all over the shelves, forget it!).  The Goose would never use an eye shadow on an eye (for cardmaking yes, but not on eyes).  Be cautious with perfumes since they could break down over time and not smell nice.

  • Cleaning agents - Again, BE CAREFUL!  The Goose NEVER EVER buys this stuff from Dollar Stores since you don't know how old it is.  This stuff also breaks down over time and may not be what you expect.

  • Personal Products - GROSS!  Unless you're using them for a purpose for which they aren't intended, don't buy them at the Dollar Store.   If you're making Survivor Flame Torches (if you're a Girl Scout, you know what I'm talking about), definitely make them using personal products from the Dollar Store!  Otherwise, forget it.

  • Toys/Baby Products - BE VERY VERY CAREFUL!  These are usually imported items toys which the Consumer Product Safety Commission has not evaluated.  In some circumstances, you might find something valuable (particularly if children will not be the recipient of the item)...but you'd better be careful!
